October 6 is logged as the beginning of the 2008 market crash. On this black Monday, the stock market would start a weeklong decline in which the Dow Jones Industrial Average would fall 1,874 points or 18.1%. [Money-Zine.com]

One thousand, six hundred and eighty four days have passed since that Monday. While there are still challenges, we’re in a very different place than we were a couple of years ago. You will know people who lost their homes. You’ll also know fellow agents who jumped ship. For better or for worse, you’re still in the game. So what are you going to do now?

The very first day of a brand new year is always a great time to put a marker in the sand and say to yourself that everything that’s past is past, and everything will be different from now forward. A brand new year is like a blank, white page … enticing, but also a little daunting. It’s easy to imagine yourself forging ahead into your brave new world, but that first step can be a killer.

January 1 is an arbitrary starting point. Today is May 17, 136 days since you made your new year’s resolutions. Where are you in relation to the marker you put in the sand? Can you even remember what you “planned” to do differently?

Winners have an important trait in common … they don’t wait for everything to be perfect to get started. You can’t possibly predict every single thing that will go right or wrong when you embark on anything, so don’t even try. Put a basic structure together and just take that first step. How much has your business changed in the last 1,684 days? The last 136 days?

The recession hit so many agents like a ton of bricks. What have you done with your business over the last 240 weeks to make sure you never get blind-sided like that again?

240 is a lot of weeks – especially if you have nothing concrete in terms of forward movement to show for them. Let me tell you about Robin Turner, selected as Rookie of the Year at a recent SuperConference, who completely turned his life around in 120 days. Robin was a part time realtor and a full time computer geek for years at Kennedy Space Center. At the end of the Space Shuttle program, when all the layoffs were coming, he was bracing to be let go.  He had been preparing for the lay off for years. During that time Robin received his broker’s license and was managing a small brokerage but not making a lot of money. You see, Robin was banking on getting laid off from his day job, anticipating a huge severance check along with the other 5,000 people.

Except that Robin did not lose his job as he was deemed too valuable. That means no big severance check. So after working for another year, Robin decided to leave on his own. How many people would actually just walk away from a good paying job to discover what they could really achieve in life? With nothing but savings, faith in  himself, and a roadmap laid out  by Craig Proctor’s Coaching Program, which he had heard about 18 months earlier but had not joined because of the perceived expense, Robin went for it. He left the safety of his comfort zone and got started on the rest of his life.

This represents a huge leap in Robin’s life as reward for him taking that first critical step. (One small step for man, one one giant leap for ...). I hope you noted the fact that Robin began the same way you did – one step at a time – a baby step at first. As we careen into the midpoint of 2013, challenge yourself to put one foot in front of the other and initiate this kind of leap for yourself. Where could you be in 120 days if you start to really use the tools and strategies we give you? But as they say, a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. Start walking, and may the next 12 months be your best year ever.
